The
requirement

Auditoriums, by nature, demand high-fidelity audio solutions capable of delivering clear and balanced sound to every seat. The Birla Auditorium, a decades-old landmark in Kolkata, required a complete audio system overhaul. This project aimed to equip it with a state-of-the-art system, ensuring an unparalleled audio experience for all attendees. The ideal solution would utilize line array technology, known for its controlled directivity and powerful output, making it a preferred choice for this venue.

The
challenge

The age of the building presented significant hurdles. Decades-old construction meant a lack of readily available architectural drawings, including internal design specifications. This absence of crucial data made pre-planning and system design extremely challenging. Application engineers typically rely on such documentation to determine optimal speaker placement, predict sound impact, and model the acoustic environment. Without these resources, the team faced a trial-and- error process, physically testing speaker positions and configurations to achieve the desired results. The flying of the Array was a big challenge as the point to hang the array had to be decided so as to be safe as well as the position had to be such that the array could sound the best. Furthermore, the auditorium posed a significant architectural constraint because of the balcony height. Line array deployment, which typically benefits from greater vertical clearance for optimal beam angle adjustment, was restricted. This limitation made achieving even sound coverage throughout the auditorium, particularly in the rear seats, a complex task. The limited height made fine-tuning the system for optimal clarity and impact difficult. Normally, a project of this scale would take 2-3 days, but the challenges extended the installation to 5 days.

CODA Nray Speakers

The
Solution

Despite the challenges, the team, comprising Star Professional Audio and Alphatec, successfully implemented a cutting-edge CODA audio system. The solution centred around CODA's NRay line array speakers, with eight units deployed per side. Four LFEs (Low-Frequency Extension units) and two subwoofers provided robust low-end reinforcement, while CODA HOPS-5 units served as front fills and delays, ensuring balanced sound coverage across the entire space.

The
IMPACT

The project's success was significantly attributed to the expertise of industry veteran Roger Drego. His extensive experience and deep understanding of acoustics, coupled with the skilled team at Alphatec, proved invaluable in overcoming the unique challenges posed by the Birla Auditorium. Mr. Drego's guidance was instrumental in navigating the complexities of the project and ensuring a world-class audio experience within the historic venue. The final result was a transformed audio experience, bringing the historic Birla Auditorium into the modern age of sound reinforcement.
