Places of worship are beyond architectural designs; they embody profound spiritual, cultural, and historical importance. One such crucial spiritual site is the Saifee Masjid, in the Bhendi Bazaar of Mumbai. It was constructed in 1926 through the guidance of His Holiness Syedna Taher Saifuddin and is a cornerstone for the Dawoodi Bohra community. A year ago, the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SBUT) spearheaded its renovation. As part of this process, the Masjid required specialised audio solutions without disturbing its aesthetics. The audio solution had to ensure clarity of speech during religious sermons while accommodating a crowd of 4000-5000 people.
The
challenge
The successful deployment of advanced audio solutions was a collaborative effort involving three expert teams: Play Technologies, Innovative Systems and Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and Alphatec. The teams brought their technical expertise and innovative approaches to overcome various challenges and designed a befitting solution. The audio solution included speakers from well- renowned global brands like Renkus Heinz and Tannoy supported by the Lab Gruppen E Series amplifiers. Renkus Heinz is a world leader in professional loudspeaker technology. They specialise in beam steering technology that allows focusing on sound where it is needed. With a venue hosting 4000-5000 people, these speakers were the perfect choice to be added to the wooden pillars of the Masjid. Further, to ensure the aesthetics of the place are maintained, around 200 Tannoy’s speakers are added to the rest of the Masjid. They completely blend into the space, especially the lobby area with a clear speech delivered all around. These high-performance equipment were thoughtfully selected to offer clear, balanced sound while handling acoustic challenges. This not only ensured an enhanced auditory experience but also kept its aesthetic appeal intact.

IMPACT
Reimagining a 100-year-old Masjid is a delicate and challenging task. However, the collaboration of the 3 teams has been appreciated by the SBUT members. The attendees are able to hear clearly the religious sermons and offer their prayers with clarity.
